why am i trying to explain NASCAR being un notable this year to an Irishman

Going back maybe a 100 years ago Cricket used to be very popular in Ireland.
The reason for that being was that it was usually played on Sundays and it used to be against the law for pubs to be opened on Sundays but alcohol was still served at cricket matches.
